National Trails Day: Project: Fraiser Dam Recreational Area

This week’s Groundwork Dallas cleanup project will be located at Fraiser Dam Recreational Area. Parking and gathering area will be at Hines Park. We will have guides to take you over to Fraiser Dam Recreational Area via the new trail at Hines Park. We will have burgers, hotdogs, and drinks at Hines Park for your enjoyment.

9th Annual Lone Star Trail Building School

Overview
The Lone Star Trail Building School (LSTBS) is a two-day course conducted at Sid Richardson Ranch (SR2) near Runaway Bay, Texas. The Basic Course will educate students on all aspects of trail building, including: design concepts, GPS mapping, corridor flagging, and construction. The school also offers an advanced course which includes topics such as armoring, switchback turns, climbing turns, crib walls, wooden construction, and rigging techniques to move large objects. However, we only teach one advanced topic each year which will lead the student from the design process to finished construction. One Fee Makes Trail Building Easy.
The Lone Star Trail Building School is all inclusive: one fee covers lodging, meals, books, instruction, building materials. Lodging includes air-conditioned cabins and dorms, and meals are served beginning Saturday morning until Sunday Lunch. Saturday night we lead a night hike through a small canyon with large rock outcroppings and once that is completed, we all relax around a large campfire and share stories from the hike and events earlier in the day.

Vans will depart Groundwork Dallas office Friday, February 17th at 2:45 PM

If Flying into Dallas Love Field or DFW Airports (Friday, February 17th)
Inbound Flights: All attendees must arrive at their perspective airport by 2:30 PM
Dallas Love Field, Groundwork Dallas will pick up attendees at the airport at 3:00 PM
DFW Airport, Groundwork Dallas will pick up attendees at the airport at 3:45 PM

Check-in at Sid Richardson Ranch
Students may start arriving after 12:00 PM on Friday the 17th of February. Keep in mind that we DO NOT start serving meals until Saturday morning. If you check in Saturday morning, please do so by 8:00 AM.

Friday Night Get Together
Everyone is invited to dine at Pronto’s Italian Restaurant and Pizza where all get together to catch up with what everyone has been doing for the past year. The food is great and we all have a good time.

National Park Conservation Association (NPCA), which was founded in 1919 to be an independent, nonpartisan voice working to strengthen and protect America’s favorite places. They rely on the support from their million members to provide America’s National Parks with a voice. They wish to inform and inspire the public to ensure that our National Parks are well protected. Erika Pelletier is the Program Manager for the Texas Regional Office and she strives to give a voice to all citizens by educating them on advocacy.

National Parks Units are usually far-away dreams for the average urban citizen. However, that has changed in Waco, TX which has just gained their first Park Unit in the form of Waco Mammoth National Monument. The newly established monument is five acres of one of the richest Ice Age fossil beds in the world and contains 23 known mammoths remains. This location is open to the public and has become an educational epicenter for Waco.  Raegan King is the force behind the Park Units success and designation. Mrs. King is the Program Coordinator at Waco Mammoth National Monument and strives to introduce the world to the wonders of the past.

The focus will be to clean in and around the Hines Park Lake. If we have time, we will walk over to the West side of I35 to what we call the ECO Classroom and do some cleanup in that area.

This week’s Groundwork Dallas project will be located Hines Park.  Parking will be in the Southwest corner of 9701 Harry Hines Blvd. next to Xenco Labs, Groundwork personnel will be there to help park cars in the correct location.

The focus will be to construct new trail at Hines Park. We will be working on the back side of the park (along I-35E) and in the wooded area just north of the parking lot. Along with building new trail we will also be constructing a raised trail surface made out of wood as well.

 

What to wear:

  • Boots (Water proof if possible)
  • Long sleeve shirt
  • Other clothing depending on weather
