Welcome to Our 2018 Green Team Conservation Corps

Welcome to Our 2018 Green Team Conservation Corps Leaders and Members! This summer, Groundwork Dallas is hosting our inaugural summer employment program. Green Team Conservation Corps brings together 14 youths and two youth leaders for a 7-week environmental career program. We are excited to introduce you to our Corps members and have asked them to tell you about themselves, why they joined Green Team Conservation Corps (GTCC), and their goals for the summer.

“I am going through taking any opportunity that comes my way. By joining GTCC I am able to do more than what I usually do. I usually stay inside to do activities rather than go out. I wanted to join GTCC to make friends and to mature towards an adult by having job experience. By the end of the summer I plan to be able to know more than what I did before.”

“Many of the interests and hobbies I have will be working out and being able to spend the time I have with the people I care about. Growing up I was a part of a youth group. They taught me how to care for others and to respect the people around me. When I heard about this job I jumped at the opportunity because it gave me the [chance] to restore the environment. My goal for the summer is for me to become the best version of myself that I can be.”

“I enjoy sports and building/fixing things. I believe these things give you a lot of freedom to express yourself. I also like playing games and competition. I wanted to join GTCC because I wanted to get outside and help my community while meeting new people. I love getting outside and bonding with people. My main goal for this summer is to get out of my comfort zone.”

Isabella, Sophomore

“Most of my favorite stuff is to dance when I have the time. I also love to be in nature when it’s not hot, but when it’s windy and the sun is going down... The reason I decided to join [GTCC] was because I volunteered here last year and I enjoyed working and helping our environment and community. I wanted to try new things and spend time away from home. My goals for this summer [are] to increase my endurance and to also gain strength. I also wanted to become more sociable with other people.”

“My mom introduced me to GTCC. After reading the packet I wanted to join when learning about the environmental service and community service we would be providing. This also would be my first job and would give me something useful to do with my time. I thought I would be a good choice for GTCC because of my previous skills I have learned through the Junior Reserved Officer Training Corps... I plan to put forth my best effort into the GTCC and hopefully to learn things about the environment while providing service to the community.”

Jason, Sophomore

“One of my hobbies that I like doing is playing sports. My interest is in Mechanical Engineering. I just like being active all the time. I joined GTCC because I want to work with new people and get more work done and help the community in a better place [and] make me a better person in the working community. My goal in the summer is to have fun but work at the same time.”

“My favorite hobbies are to play soccer and Fortnite. I am interested in traveling and meeting new people. I wanted to join GTCC because I love doing stuff outside. Moreover, I don’t know much about plants, therefore, this would be a good chance to learn. My goals for the summer are to make some money and get to spend time with family.”

“I am from Dallas, TX, and I am into sports. I am mostly into soccer, basketball, and kind of football. I wanted to join GTCC because I want to remain outdoors for most of my summer and coming here would help me achieve that goal. Also I would like to help out the community in some way. My goals for this summer are to gain skills from this summer program. Also to hopefully save that money I will earn to use productively.”

“I am a very talkative person. Once I’m comfortable with you that is that. [I] can’t live without music. I play a multitude of sports including volleyball, basketball, track, and cross-country. I’m from the great city of Chicago… I decided to join [GTCC] because I felt that not only would it preoccupy my summer but it would also give me a chance to stay active, see new things, and meet new people. My goals for the summer are honestly to perfect my volleyball and basketball skills and to better myself.”

Lourdes, Junior

“A couple of things I like to do [are] play around with my Collie Husky mixed puppy. I also like to blast my music and just lay there and enjoy it. Finally I like to go out and explore anything near me. A reason I wanted to join [GTCC] is because throughout your work you learn more about how your actions affect your water. Also it feels good to help or clean up. Some goals I have are… to become a better leader. Another goal of mine is to have the feeling of achievement.”

Miguel, Sophomore

“A couple of things about me [are] that I am part of a musical band that plays Latin American genres. I play the saxophone, drums, and am one of the vocalists… I wanted to join GTCC because I wanted to work under a program that was different and gave me an amazing first experience as an official job. My goals for this summer [are] to give it my all at this position and create a budget with my earnings.”

Nicholas, Junior

“My hobbies are playing video games and watching Netflix/YouTube. I am interested in nature and wildlife. I wanted to join GTCC to help conserve nature, I also wanted to get work experience in the field of conservation. My main goal for the summer is to learn more as well as have a good time.”

“I’m in band and I play the Bb clarinet. I like to hang out with friends, listen to music, or write in my free time. The sport I like to play is volleyball. I have three younger sisters that are a pain, but I love dearly. I wanted to join GTCC because I like being outdoors, and I wanted to make my own money in the summer. I also needed something to do during the summer, besides sitting around all day. One of my goals for the summer is I want to learn more about working outdoors…”
